Eye contact
Making eye contact is such an underrated tactic and often neglected by coaches. I’ve seen fights won and lost just by using eye contact. As it can have a huge psychical advantage over your opponent.
From a distance, how you hold your posture and walk play a role in portraying confidence, but ultimately looking into someone eyes gives an insight into their metal state.
It allows you to see if your opponent is 100% committed to doing everything they can to win or can be used to sense weakness.
Everyone behaves differently when they see their opponent. I used this information to get an indication of how they may fight.
- Were they angry
- Were they nervous
- Were they fidgeting
- Were they focused
- Were they hard to read
- Were the confident
- Were they scared ……etc
A confident individual will lock eye contact without a flicker, looking away, down, nodding or without fidgeting. They know they are ready for war.
An unprepared individual knows deep down they haven’t done enough. A confident fighter can cut through the bravado and see they aren’t ready.
So use this information when you see your opponent for the first time, at the weigh-in, during the face-off, rules meetings, passing each other at the venue and in the ring just before go time.
This should give an indication of their mental state and give an indication of how likely they’ll come out for the first round.
