Protein for weight loss  #4 of 22 : The Thermic Effect of Protein to Boost Your Metabolism

In this post we're going to discuss the thermic effect of food and how protein can help lose weight:

The thermic effect of food (TEF) is the process of burning calories while digesting food.  Some foods have a higher TEF  and require more energy to digest, which means they can help boost your metabolism and burn more calories.

Protein is one of the most thermogenic macronutrients, meaning it has a higher TEF than carbohydrates or fats.

Studies have shown the TEF for protein is about 25-30% higher, which means that for every 100 calories of protein you eat, your body burns 25-30 calories just to digest it.

Compare that to carbohydrates at 5-10% and fat is 0-3%. As you can see, eating more protein can help boost your metabolism and burn just by digesting

So that’s another great reason to include 20-30 grams of protein per meal.

So stay tuned! for post 5 in our mini series where we'll be talking about another great benefit of eating more protein.
